WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER LIMB LENGTHENING?

Lengthening is a gradual process: the bone is stretched slowly and regenerates, so results develop over several months. For larger gains of more than 6-7 cm, the surgery is split into two stages with a recovery period in between. Your medical team will agree the method and timeline with you after assessing your case.

  5. Step 5: Removal or second surgery

    With the rod method, a second operation adds locking screws and removes the frame.

Who can undergo limb lengthening?

Natural growth must be complete. Candidates should be healthy, non-smokers and complete a psychological evaluation. For a first assessment, photographs in underwear are usually requested, with your face covered if you prefer.

What methods are available?

Lengthening with external fixation systems, with an intramedullary rod and two external half-frames, and bilateral femur lengthening at one or two levels. Bowed or knock-kneed legs are treated with a corrective open-wedge osteotomy.

How much can a bowed leg be corrected?

In a pure femoral O-shaped deformity, an open-wedge osteotomy can add up to 2.5 cm of height. Pseudo O-shaped legs are treated with silicone implants.

Can the treatment time be shortened?

Bilateral lengthening at two levels reduces the duration of the process by around 30%, which helps if you are short on time.
