How to compare plastic surgery clinics abroad: a practical checklist

A step-by-step checklist for comparing clinics and surgeons in another country — licences, experience, what an estimate should include and the questions worth asking before you travel.

Choosing where to have a procedure is the most important decision in any medical trip. Price is easy to compare; the things that matter more — who operates, where, and what happens if you need help afterwards — take a little more work. This checklist helps you compare clinics on the same terms.

1. Confirm who will perform your procedure

Ask for the name of the surgeon, not only the clinic. A reputable clinic will tell you who will operate and who will be responsible for your follow-up. Ask how often that doctor performs the specific procedure you are considering.

  • Is the surgeon licensed to practise in the country where the operation takes place?
  • Which professional associations is the surgeon a member of? You can usually verify membership directly with the association.
  • Will the same surgeon see you for the pre-operative consultation and the check-ups after surgery?

2. Check the facility

Ask where the procedure will take place and what kind of facility it is — a hospital, a day-surgery clinic or a medical centre. Ask about anaesthesia: who administers it and what monitoring is in place.

3. Ask for a written, itemised estimate

A useful estimate lists what is and is not included, for example:

  • surgeon and anaesthesia fees;
  • operating room and overnight stay, if needed;
  • pre-operative tests;
  • medications and compression garments;
  • follow-up appointments during your stay;
  • transfers, accommodation and interpreter services, if they are part of a package.

Final costs can only be confirmed after a consultation, because they depend on your medical history and the exact plan. Be cautious about any offer that guarantees a result or a fixed price before anyone has reviewed your case.

4. Understand aftercare before you book

  • How many days should you stay in the country after the procedure?
  • Who do you contact if you have a question after you return home?
  • How are follow-up consultations handled remotely?

5. Questions to ask during the consultation

  • Am I a suitable candidate for this procedure? Are there alternatives?
  • What are the risks that apply to my situation?
  • What does recovery usually involve, and when can I fly home?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos shared with patient consent?
