Thread lift vs facelift: which one suits your face and age

A thread lift gives a subtle, temporary lift with little downtime; a facelift gives a lasting result through surgery. Here is how to tell which fits you.

A thread lift gives a gentle, temporary lift with only a few days of downtime, while a surgical facelift repositions the deeper tissues and removes loose skin for a much stronger and longer-lasting result. If your sagging is mild and you want a subtle refresh, threads can make sense. If you already have jowls, a heavy lower face or loose neck skin, a facelift is usually the honest answer. This guide explains how to decide, what each option really involves and how either can be planned in Yerevan, Armenia.

What is a thread lift and how does it work?

Fine dissolvable threads are placed under the skin through a needle or cannula, usually under local anaesthetic. The most common materials are polydioxanone (PDO), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL). Barbed or coned threads grip the tissue and lift it; smooth threads are used mainly to stimulate collagen and improve skin quality.

The procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes. There are no incisions, just small entry points. Over the following months the threads dissolve and leave behind a collagen response, which keeps part of the effect.

How long does a thread lift last?

Most people see the lifting effect for roughly 6 to 18 months, depending on the thread type, skin quality and the area treated. It is most visible in the first weeks and then softens.

What a thread lift can realistically do:

  • Lift the mid-cheek slightly and soften early smile lines.
  • Sharpen the jawline when sagging is just starting.
  • Raise the tail of the brow a little.
  • Improve skin firmness through collagen stimulation.

What it cannot do: remove excess skin, correct established jowls, tighten neck bands or replace a facelift in a face with advanced laxity. Many “thread lift gone wrong” stories start with a patient who was promised exactly that.

What a surgical facelift actually changes

In a modern facelift (SMAS or deep plane techniques) the surgeon works on the muscle and fascia layer of the face, repositions it and then trims excess skin without pulling it tight. Incisions sit in front of and behind the ear and, if the neck is treated, in the hairline or under the chin.

It is done under general anaesthetic or deep sedation and takes several hours. Results usually last many years, often around 7 to 10, although ageing continues. You can read more on our facelift page.

Thread lift vs facelift: side-by-side comparison

Factor Thread lift Facelift
Degree of sagging Mild or early Moderate to advanced
Anaesthesia Local General or deep sedation
Procedure time 30 to 60 minutes Several hours
Social downtime 3 to 7 days 2 to 3 weeks
How long it lasts About 6 to 18 months Many years
Scars None, only entry points Yes, discreet around the ears
Removes loose skin No Yes

Who is a good candidate for each?

Threads tend to suit people roughly between 35 and 50 with good skin quality, early laxity and a wish for a subtle change without surgery. They are also used for maintenance years after a facelift.

A facelift fits better when there is loose skin on the neck, the jawline has clearly lost its shape or threads no longer give the result you want. Quite a few patients go through several rounds of threads and later realise that, adding up the cost and time, a facelift would have served them better.

Age is a guide, not a rule. Some 45-year-olds need a facelift; some 60-year-olds with good skin do well with smaller treatments. Your surgeon decides after reviewing photos and examining you.

Thread lift recovery, risks and side effects

Thread lift recovery is short but not zero. Expect bruising, swelling, tightness when chewing or yawning and small puckers or dimples in the skin for a few days. Sleep on your back and avoid wide mouth movements, facial massage and intense exercise for the period your doctor advises.

Less common problems include asymmetry, a thread that can be felt or pokes through the skin, infection or persistent pain, which may mean removing the thread.

A facelift carries the risks of any surgery: haematoma (most often in the first hours), infection, poor scarring, temporary numbness and, uncommonly, injury to a branch of the facial nerve, which usually recovers. Smoking clearly increases healing problems, so you will be asked to stop for several weeks before and after.

Doing it in Yerevan: how long to stay and when to fly

For threads, 2 to 4 days in Yerevan is usually enough: procedure, a check the next day and some buffer. Many people fly after one or two days, once the doctor is happy.

For a facelift, plan around 7 to 10 days: drain removal if drains are used, dressing changes and stitch removal. Flying home is typically cleared from about one week, depending on how you are healing. Medarmenia arranges your transfer, accommodation and an interpreter if needed, plus remote check-ins by photo or video call once you are home. It also helps to let your GP know about the procedure.

Cost depends on the number and type of threads, or the facelift technique, anaesthesia, nights in clinic and accommodation, so we work from a personal estimate rather than generic figures. Browse all options on our surgeries page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a thread lift last?

Usually around 6 to 18 months, depending on the thread type and your skin. Collagen stimulation may keep some firmness a little longer.

Is a thread lift painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you mostly feel pressure. Tightness and discomfort when chewing are common for the first days.

Can a thread lift fix jowls?

It can soften very early jowls. Established jowls with loose skin usually need a facelift for a meaningful result.

Is a thread lift worth it compared with a facelift?

It can be worth it for mild laxity and a short-term refresh. For advanced sagging, repeated thread sessions often add up to more cost and less result than one facelift.

Can I combine threads with other treatments?

Yes, threads are often combined with fillers or skin treatments. Your doctor will plan the order and spacing to keep risks low.
