Chin implant or genioplasty: balancing your nose and chin

Surgeon draws planning lines along a patient's chin and jaw

A weak chin can make a nose look bigger. How chin implants and genioplasty work, and when combining them with rhinoplasty makes sense.

A chin implant is the most common way to add projection to a weak or receding chin, and the alternative is a sliding genioplasty, which moves your own chin bone. Chin surgery is often discussed alongside rhinoplasty, because nose and chin are read together in profile: a receding chin makes the nose look bigger, and vice versa. Combining them is sometimes called profileplasty. Here we explain the options, the recovery and how to organise surgery in Yerevan, Armenia.

What can chin surgery correct?

The chin gives structure to the lower third of the face. Chin surgery (mentoplasty) can:

  • Increase projection of a receding chin, the most common request.
  • Reduce a chin that is too prominent or too long.
  • Correct asymmetry, side to side or vertical.
  • Sharpen the jaw-neck angle, especially when combined with chin liposuction.

It is important to tell a small chin apart from a bite problem. If the whole lower jaw sits back and your teeth do not meet properly, orthognathic (jaw) surgery with an orthodontist may be indicated instead, which is a different operation. Your surgeon assesses this from profile photos and, where needed, an X-ray or CT scan.

Chin implant vs sliding genioplasty: what’s the difference?

There are two main techniques, and the choice depends on your anatomy and the change you need:

Chin implant Sliding genioplasty
How it works Solid silicone or similar implant placed over the bone The chin bone is cut, repositioned and fixed with plates and screws
Incision Under the chin or inside the mouth Inside the mouth
Best for Mild to moderate lack of projection Larger advances, lengthening or shortening, asymmetry
Recovery Shorter More swelling and numbness
Advantage Simpler and quicker Uses your own bone, no foreign body

Sliding genioplasty is performed by plastic or maxillofacial surgeons experienced in the technique. There is also non-surgical chin augmentation with hyaluronic acid filler, useful for small changes or to preview the effect, but it is temporary.

Profileplasty: rhinoplasty and chin augmentation together

When the nose is prominent and the chin recedes, treating the nose alone may fall short: even after reduction, the profile still looks unbalanced. Bringing the chin forward a few millimetres makes the nose appear smaller and the profile more harmonious. That is why the two are often done in one session, if the surgeon considers it safe given the operating time and your health.

Benefits of combining them:

  • one anaesthetic and one recovery period;
  • planning looks at the whole profile, not isolated features;
  • the nose often needs less reduction, which helps protect breathing.

For nose options, see our rhinoplasty page. Based on Yerevan clinics’ public price lists in early 2026, primary rhinoplasty costs roughly 400,000 to 1,000,000 AMD (about $1,000 to 2,600). Chin implant cost depends on technique, implant type and whether it is combined with other surgery, and we calculate it in your personal estimate.

How do you know if your chin is weak?

Surgeons use simple reference lines on a profile photo taken with your head level. One common check is a vertical line dropped from the lower lip: in many balanced profiles, the most forward point of the chin sits close to that line in men and slightly behind it in women. Another is the line from the tip of the nose to the chin and how the lips relate to it.

These are guides, not fixed rules. Ethnicity, personal taste and the face as a whole all matter, and a small chin can look perfectly fine on one face and unbalanced on another. That is why good photos are so useful: no smiling, relaxed lips, even light and both sides. If you wear braces or have had orthodontic work, mention it, as tooth position changes how the lower face reads.

Chin implant recovery day by day

Typical timelines, which your surgeon will adjust to you:

  • Days 1 to 3: swelling and tightness, sometimes supportive tape or a dressing. With an intraoral incision, a soft diet and mouth rinses.
  • Days 4 to 10: swelling eases; many return to desk work around the end of this period.
  • Weeks 2 to 3: most people are socially comfortable; after genioplasty swelling lasts a little longer.
  • Months 3 to 6: final contour.

Temporary numbness of the lower lip and chin is common for several weeks, especially after genioplasty, because the mental nerve runs through the area; in most cases sensation returns. Other risks include infection, implant shift or malposition, asymmetry, mild bone erosion under an implant over the long term and, after genioplasty, discomfort from plates. Strenuous exercise usually waits 4 to 6 weeks.

Chin surgery in Yerevan: stay and follow-up

For a chin implant, 5 to 7 days in Yerevan is usually enough; for genioplasty or profileplasty, plan 7 to 10 days, until stitches and any nasal splint are removed. Flying is generally possible at the end of that period with your surgeon’s approval. Check entry rules for your passport before booking.

Clinics in Yerevan work in Armenian, Russian and English, and Medarmenia coordinates transfers, accommodation and an interpreter. At home, your GP or dentist can check healing, and your surgeon follows up through photos at about 1, 3 and 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chin implant permanent?

It is designed to last indefinitely and is not replaced routinely. It is only removed or exchanged if a complication occurs or you want a different result.

Will there be a visible scar?

With an incision inside the mouth there is no visible scar. An incision under the chin leaves a fine line in the natural crease that is usually hard to spot.

Is a chin implant different for men and women?

The technique is the same, but the goal differs: men usually want a wider, squarer chin, women a narrower, softer one.

Can I preview the result?

A digital simulation or a temporary filler can give a rough idea. Neither guarantees the surgical outcome.

When can I go back to work?

For desk work, often after 7 to 10 days with an implant and a little longer after genioplasty.

If you feel your profile is out of balance, send profile photos from both sides and a front view through our contact page. In a free online consultation, a Yerevan surgeon will tell you whether to address the nose, the chin or both, and we will prepare a personal estimate.
