Chin liposuction or neck lift: how to define your jawline

Fat, skin or muscle: how to tell whether chin liposuction is enough or you need a neck lift, and what recovery looks like for each.

Chin liposuction removes fat under the chin and sharpens the angle between the jaw and neck. It works best when the problem is mainly fat and the skin is still elastic. If you also have loose skin or visible vertical bands, a neck lift is usually what is needed. This guide helps you tell the two apart and explains how surgery can be organised in Yerevan, Armenia.

Double chin: is it fat, skin or muscle?

A double chin can have three causes, often combined, and each calls for a different fix:

  • Subcutaneous fat under the chin: common in younger people, in families with a double chin, or after weight gain. It responds to liposuction.
  • Loose skin: comes with age or after major weight loss. Liposuction alone cannot tighten it enough.
  • Separated platysma muscle, forming vertical neck bands. This is corrected with platysmaplasty, part of a neck lift.

Surgeons look at other factors too. A weak or retruded chin makes any double chin look bigger, and fat lying beneath the muscle or prominent submandibular glands cannot be removed with a cannula. That is why a proper assessment matters, even if it starts with profile photos.

How chin liposuction works and who is a good candidate

The surgeon makes tiny incisions, a few millimetres long, under the chin and sometimes behind the earlobes. A thin cannula removes fat and sculpts the jawline. It is often done under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia when combined with other procedures, and usually takes about an hour.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • you have localised fat under the chin that does not shift with diet or exercise;
  • your neck skin still has good elasticity (often the case before 40 to 45, though it varies);
  • your weight is stable and you have no conditions that rule out surgery.

For liposuction of other areas, see our liposuction page.

When do you need a neck lift instead?

A neck lift is indicated for excess skin, platysmal bands or a “turkey neck”. Incisions are hidden behind the ears and in the crease under the chin. The surgeon tightens the muscle, removes surplus skin and adds liposuction if needed. It is often combined with a facelift, because a sagging neck usually goes together with sagging in the lower face.

Chin liposuction recovery day by day

A rough guide to what most people experience after chin liposuction:

  • Days 1 to 3: swelling, tightness and bruising; you wear a compression chin strap day and night.
  • Days 4 to 7: swelling starts to ease; most people can work from home.
  • Weeks 2 to 3: bruising fades; the strap is often worn at night only for another week or two.
  • Months 3 to 6: residual swelling settles and the final contour appears.

Neck lift recovery is longer. There may be drains for the first 24 to 48 hours, a tight, stiff neck for several weeks, and stitches come out around days 7 to 10. Sleep with your head raised and avoid sudden neck twisting.

Risks include contour irregularities if too much fat is removed, haematoma, infection, skin that does not fully retract and, rarely, injury to the nerve that moves the corner of the mouth, which is usually temporary. A careful surgeon leaves a thin layer of fat under the skin to avoid a hollow look.

Are there non-surgical options for a double chin?

Non-surgical choices include deoxycholic acid injections, which break down fat over several sessions, and radiofrequency or focused ultrasound devices that mildly tighten skin. They suit small double chins, need several sessions and give more modest results. For very lax skin they do not replace surgery. Availability depends on the clinic, and Medarmenia checks what each centre offers before proposing a plan.

Chin liposuction cost depends mainly on technique (liposuction alone or a lift), anaesthesia type, whether it is combined with another procedure and how long you stay. Your actual figure comes from a personal estimate.

Double chin surgery in Yerevan: stay and follow-up

For chin liposuction, 3 to 5 days in Yerevan is usually enough for consultation, surgery and a first check. For a neck lift, plan 7 to 10 days until stitches are removed. Flying is often possible a few days after liposuction and around a week after a neck lift, always with your surgeon’s approval. Check entry requirements for your passport before booking.

Clinics in Yerevan work in Armenian, Russian and English, and Medarmenia arranges transfers, accommodation and an interpreter if needed. At home your GP can handle basic follow-up while your surgeon reviews photos remotely.

Frequently asked questions

Can fat come back after chin liposuction?

Removed fat cells do not regrow, but remaining ones can expand if you gain weight. With a stable weight, results usually last for many years.

Does chin liposuction hurt?

Most people describe tightness and tenderness rather than severe pain. Common painkillers usually manage it for a few days.

Can I combine it with a chin implant or rhinoplasty?

Yes, this is a popular profile combination. Your surgeon decides whether to do it in one session based on operating time and your health.

At what age is a neck lift better than liposuction?

Age alone does not decide it; skin quality and muscle bands do. Some people need a neck lift at 40, others are fine with liposuction at 55.

How long do I wear the chin strap?

Typically day and night for a week, then at night for one to two more weeks. Always follow your surgeon’s specific instructions.
