Combining plastic surgery procedures: what can be done at once
Combining two or three cosmetic procedures saves a trip and an anaesthetic, but there are limits. Common combinations and when to stage surgery instead.
Combining plastic surgery procedures means doing two or more operations in a single session, such as a tummy tuck with breast surgery, or rhinoplasty with a chin implant. For anyone travelling to Yerevan, Armenia, the appeal is obvious: one trip, one anaesthetic, one recovery. It is often possible, but within safety limits set by your health, the total operating time and the areas involved, not by the wish list.
This guide covers what is commonly combined, what is usually staged, and who makes the final call.
Can you have multiple plastic surgeries at once?
Yes, and in many cases it is standard practice. Plastic surgery bodies accept combined procedures in healthy patients when the team controls three variables:
- Total anaesthesia time: the risk of complications, especially blood clots, rises with hours on the table. Many surgeons set a ceiling of roughly 5 to 6 hours for elective cosmetic surgery.
- Area and volume treated: more operated zones mean more swelling, more fluid shifts and a tougher recovery. Liposuction has limits on the volume removed per session.
- Your health: age, BMI, smoking, anaemia, diabetes or a history of clots all change what is reasonable on one day.
Before agreeing to a combination, the surgeon and anaesthetist review your history and blood tests. Some use formal clot-risk scores to decide on prevention or to recommend staging.
Common combinations, and when to stage surgery
The table below is a general guide; your plan may differ.
| Combination | Usually done together? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tummy tuck + breast (mommy makeover) | Yes, often | Long operation; recovery is that of major surgery |
| Tummy tuck + flank liposuction | Yes | Aggressive lipo in the same area is limited to protect the skin |
| Rhinoplasty + chin augmentation | Yes | Balances the profile; moderate operating time |
| Rhinoplasty + septoplasty | Yes | Almost always one procedure |
| Eyelid surgery + facelift or brow lift | Yes | A classic facial rejuvenation pairing |
| Full body lift + arms + thighs | Usually not | After massive weight loss this is staged |
| Brazilian butt lift + other major surgery | With caution | Many surgeons limit what is added |
The rule of thumb: the larger the areas and the longer the total time, the more likely your surgeon will suggest two stages, a few months apart.
Benefits and risks of combined procedures
Benefits:
- One anaesthetic and one hospital stay.
- One period of time off, even if it is more demanding.
- One trip and, usually, a lower total cost than two separate operations.
- A more balanced result when areas relate to each other, such as nose and chin.
Risks and downsides:
- Higher risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism with long operations.
- More blood loss and a chance of needing extra nights in the clinic.
- A harder recovery: soreness in several areas, reduced mobility and more fatigue.
- A complication in one area can slow recovery everywhere else.
A good team will never sell you an all-in-one plan without explaining this. If a provider agrees to any combination without asking questions, get a second opinion.
How a combined operation is planned
- Initial online consultation with photos and your medical history to see what is realistic.
- Tests before travel or on arrival: blood count, clotting, sometimes an ECG.
- Anaesthetist review to confirm the plan is safe for you.
- Clot prevention: early walking, compression stockings or calf pumps and, where indicated, medication.
- Order of areas and, if needed, a split into two stages.
The surgeon and anaesthetist decide what is done and in what order, never the package.
When is it better not to combine surgeries?
Surgeons often recommend separating procedures, even when combining would be technically possible, in situations such as these:
- You smoke and cannot stop for several weeks before and after surgery.
- You have a high BMI, anaemia or a history of blood clots.
- The plan would clearly exceed a reasonable operating time.
- You will not have help at home during the first weeks.
Staging is not a failure of planning. It is often the safer route, and the result is the same.
Combined surgery in Yerevan: how long to stay and flying home
A large combination such as a mommy makeover usually needs 10 to 14 days in Yerevan: hospital stay, check-ups, drain removal if used, and a final review before flying. Shorter facial combinations may need 7 to 10 days. When surgery is staged, the second operation is usually several months later, once you have recovered from the first.
A long flight adds to clot risk after extensive surgery, so your surgeon will tell you when to fly and what to do: compression stockings, plenty of water, and getting up to walk the aisle. Back home, follow-up continues by video call and photos; keep your GP or a local plastic surgeon informed for any in-person check. You can browse every procedure we coordinate on our surgeries page.
What does combined surgery cost?
Combining usually lowers the total because theatre time, anaesthesia, the hospital stay and travel are shared. The final price depends on which procedures, how long the operation takes, nights in the clinic, compression garments and accommodation. We prepare a personal estimate that shows each part clearly, and, where relevant, the cost of one session versus two.
Frequently asked questions
How many plastic surgeries can be done at once?
There is no fixed number. What matters is the total operating time and the areas treated. Two or three procedures together are common when the hours stay reasonable and your health allows it.
Is it more dangerous to combine plastic surgeries?
A longer operation carries somewhat more risk, mainly of blood clots. With careful patient selection and prevention measures, many combinations are considered safe.
Is recovery longer after combined procedures?
It is usually longer and harder than for each operation alone, but much shorter than two full recoveries at different times.
Can liposuction be combined with a tummy tuck?
Often yes, especially on the flanks. Your surgeon may limit liposuction on the central abdomen to protect the skin’s blood supply.
Who decides whether I can combine procedures?
The surgeon and anaesthetist, after reviewing your history, tests and goals. They may suggest staging if that is safer.
