Plastic surgery complications: warning signs and when to call a doctor
How to tell normal post-operative discomfort from the warning signs that mean you should call your surgeon or go to the emergency department.
Most plastic surgery complications are uncommon and, when spotted early, are usually manageable. The key is telling normal recovery (swelling, bruising, tightness) apart from warning signs: a high temperature, pain that gets worse, swelling on one side only, breathlessness or calf pain. This guide helps you recognise them, whether you are recovering in Yerevan, Armenia, or already back home. It does not replace your surgeon’s instructions: if in doubt, call.
What is normal after cosmetic surgery, and what is not?
Your body reacts to any operation with inflammation. In the first days you can expect:
- Swelling and bruising, which usually peak around day two or three.
- Moderate pain that is controlled by your prescribed painkillers and eases day by day.
- Tightness, tingling or numb patches around the incision.
- A little pinkish fluid on the dressing or in the drains early on.
- Tiredness and low mood or mood swings in the first week.
What is not normal is the opposite trend: symptoms that get worse instead of better, appear suddenly or affect one side only.
Warning signs after plastic surgery: when to call your doctor
| Symptom | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature of 38 °C (100.4 °F) or higher, chills | Infection | Call your surgeon the same day |
| Spreading redness, heat, pus or a bad smell | Wound infection | Call your surgeon the same day |
| Sudden, tense, painful swelling on one side | Haematoma | Call immediately |
| Soft, fluid-like swelling days or weeks later | Seroma | Get checked within 24 to 48 hours |
| Dark, purple or black skin at the wound edge | Skin compromise | Call immediately |
| Pain and swelling in one calf | Deep vein thrombosis | Urgent medical care |
| Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood | Pulmonary embolism | Call emergency services (112, 999 or 911) |
Also get in touch if bleeding soaks through the dressing, you cannot pass urine, vomiting stops you keeping fluids down, or pain does not respond to your prescribed medication.
Infection, haematoma and seroma: how to recognise them
Infection. It usually shows up from day three to five, not in the first hours. The wound becomes redder, warmer and more painful, may ooze, and you often run a temperature. Most cases respond to antibiotics and wound care, and the sooner the better.
Haematoma. This is a collection of blood under the skin, most typical in the first 24 to 48 hours. In the breast, neck or face it feels like rapid, firm, lopsided swelling. Some need a return to theatre to drain them, so do not wait to see if it settles. After a facelift or breast surgery, it is one of the complications teams watch most closely.
Seroma. Clear fluid can collect after liposuction or a tummy tuck, often once drains come out or the garment is left off. It feels like a soft area that sloshes slightly. It is rarely an emergency, but it may need draining if it grows, and a well-fitted compression garment helps prevent it.
Blood clots and pulmonary embolism: symptoms that are an emergency
Deep vein thrombosis is a clot in a vein, almost always in the leg. Risk rises with long, combined or abdominal surgery, immobility, hormonal contraception, smoking, obesity and long flights. It shows up as calf pain, swelling of one leg and warmth.
If part of the clot travels to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), you get sudden breathlessness, chest pain that worsens when you breathe in, a racing pulse or coughing up blood. This is an emergency: call 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK or 911 in the US without waiting for your surgeon. Walking early, wearing compression stockings and following any clot prevention you are prescribed are the best defences.
What to do if something goes wrong in Yerevan or at home
While you are in Yerevan, the clinic and your coordinator give you contact numbers from day one, including for nights. If something feels off, message or call; if it is serious, ask for help straight away. Medarmenia arranges transport to the clinic and stays with you, with an interpreter if needed.
Once you are home:
- Take clear, well-lit photos of the area and send them to your surgeon or coordinator.
- Keep your discharge summary and medication list to hand.
- If it is urgent, go to the emergency department or call emergency services and show that summary.
- For non-urgent checks, your GP or a local plastic surgeon can see you in coordination with the Yerevan team.
This is why it pays to stay in Yerevan for as long as your surgeon advises, usually 5 to 14 days depending on the procedure: the earliest problems, such as haematoma, tend to appear in that window. Remote follow-up is part of what we coordinate.
Does insurance cover plastic surgery complications?
Many standard travel insurance policies exclude planned treatment and its complications, and health insurance at home may not cover them either. Before you travel, read the small print or look for a dedicated policy for complications of surgery abroad. Ask the clinic in writing what its quote covers if you need to go back to theatre for an early complication. Having that clear avoids surprises at the worst moment.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fever normal after cosmetic surgery?
A slight rise in temperature on day one or two can be a normal reaction. At 38 °C or above, or if a fever appears days later, contact your surgeon.
When is a haematoma most likely?
Mostly in the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Avoiding exertion, keeping blood pressure under control and not taking blood-thinning products without approval all lower the risk.
How do I know if I have a seroma?
You notice a soft, swollen area that seems to contain fluid, often after drains are removed. Get it checked within a day or two, as it may need a simple needle drainage.
Can leg pain after surgery be serious?
Yes. Calf pain with swelling in one leg may be a blood clot, so seek medical care the same day.
Does travel insurance cover cosmetic surgery complications?
Many standard policies do not, because the treatment was planned. Check the terms or buy specific cover before you travel.
