Sinus lift and bone graft for implants: recovery, risks and travel
When a dental bone graft or sinus lift is needed, what recovery feels like, how long healing takes and how to plan trips to Yerevan around it.
A sinus lift and bone graft rebuild missing jawbone so a dental implant has enough support. A bone graft can be done anywhere in the jaw, before the implant or at the same time; a sinus lift is a specific graft for the upper back teeth, where the sinus sits just above the bone. Both add time to treatment, sometimes several months, but they make implants possible where there was not enough bone. Here is how the procedures work, what recovery is really like, which complications to know about and how the timing fits if you are treated in Yerevan, Armenia.
Why bone is missing and when you need a graft
After a tooth is lost, the bone that held it no longer gets stimulation and starts to shrink, most of all during the first year. Gum disease, difficult extractions and years of wearing a removable denture also reduce it. In the upper back jaw there is an extra factor: the maxillary sinus tends to expand downward, leaving little bone height.
The surgeon checks this on a cone beam CT scan. If the implant would not have enough bone around it to be stable and last, a graft is proposed.
Types of dental bone graft
Graft materials fall into four main groups:
- Your own bone (autograft): taken from another area of the mouth, such as the chin or the back of the lower jaw. It integrates very well but adds a second surgical site.
- Human donor bone (allograft): processed and sterilised by tissue banks.
- Animal-derived bone (xenograft): usually bovine, treated so only the mineral structure remains. Widely used and slowly resorbed.
- Synthetic substitutes: ceramic materials such as tricalcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite.
The graft is usually covered with a membrane, often resorbable, that protects it while new bone grows. This is called guided bone regeneration. Materials are often combined, and your surgeon chooses them based on the defect.
Sinus lift procedure: open (lateral) or closed (crestal)
| Factor | Closed (crestal) sinus lift | Open (lateral window) sinus lift |
|---|---|---|
| When it is used | Bone height is a little short | Bone height is very short |
| Access | Through the implant site itself | Through a small window in the side wall of the jaw |
| Implant | Almost always placed at the same time | Same time or months later, depending on stability |
| Recovery | Easier | More swelling and bruising |
| Wait until the crown | Usually 4 to 6 months | Usually 6 to 9 months or longer |
In both, the thin membrane lining the sinus is gently lifted and graft material is placed underneath. Your surgeon decides the technique and timing.
Sinus lift recovery: what to expect day by day
Swelling usually peaks at 48 to 72 hours and then settles. Bruising on the cheek, sometimes reaching under the eye, is common, and soreness is usually controlled with painkillers. After a sinus lift you may notice a little blood from the nose in the first days. Stitches usually come out after 7 to 14 days.
Typical aftercare advice:
- Cold packs on and off for the first 24 to 48 hours.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised.
- Soft, lukewarm food, chewing on the other side.
- No smoking: it is one of the biggest threats to a graft.
- After a sinus lift: no forceful nose blowing for about two weeks, sneeze with your mouth open, no straws.
- No intense exercise, sauna or swimming for the first days.
- Take the prescribed medication exactly as instructed (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, sometimes a decongestant).
Bone graft and sinus lift complications
Most grafts heal well, but the risks are worth knowing: infection, the wound opening and exposing the membrane, partial or complete graft loss, a tear in the sinus membrane (often repaired during the same surgery) and sinusitis. Call your surgeon if you have a fever, pain that gets worse after three or four days, pus, a persistent bad taste, granules coming out of the nose or wound, or a feeling that air passes from your mouth into your nose.
Bone grafting in Yerevan: stay, flying and number of trips
A graft adds time, so plan for it from the start. These are the usual patterns:
- Graft and implant together (small grafts or a closed sinus lift): two trips, one for surgery and one for the crown 4 to 6 months later.
- Graft first, implant later (larger defects or an open sinus lift): often three trips, the graft, the implant after 6 to 9 months, and the crown a few months after that.
For the surgery trip, allow around 7 to 10 days in Yerevan if you want a check-up before flying; stitches can also be removed by your dentist at home. After a sinus lift, cabin pressure changes can be uncomfortable, and patients are often advised to wait from a few days up to two weeks before flying. Your surgeon decides. EU citizens can currently enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days a year; other nationalities should check current rules. While you heal at home, Medarmenia keeps in touch with the clinic.
Cost depends on the type and amount of graft material, the membrane, whether the sinus lift is open or closed and the number of trips. You will see it itemised in your personal estimate. More on our implants and veneers page.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dental bone graft painful?
Not during surgery, thanks to local anaesthesia and, if indicated, sedation. Afterwards expect swelling and soreness for several days, usually controlled with painkillers.
How long does a bone graft take to heal?
The gum heals in one to two weeks, but the bone usually needs 4 to 9 months before it is ready, depending on the size and technique.
Is bovine bone graft safe?
Bovine xenografts used in dentistry are processed to remove organic material and have been used for many years. If you prefer another option, discuss it with your surgeon.
Can the implant go in on the same day as the graft?
Often yes, if the implant is stable. With large defects or very little bone height, waiting is usually safer.
When can I fly after a sinus lift?
Usually after a few days, and sometimes not for up to two weeks. Your surgeon will tell you when it is safe in your case.
