Eyebrow transplant: technique, density, healing and maintenance

How an eyebrow transplant is done hair by hair, how many grafts it takes, how long healing lasts and the upkeep transplanted brows need.

An eyebrow transplant moves hairs from your own scalp to the brows, one at a time, to fill sparse areas or rebuild a brow that no longer grows. It is done under local anaesthetic, usually needs about 150 to 400 grafts per brow, and the result is judged at 8 to 12 months. It is permanent, with one detail everyone should know in advance: transplanted hair keeps growing like scalp hair. Here is how it works and how to organise it in Yerevan, Armenia.

How is an eyebrow transplant done?

The technique is FUE. The surgeon removes follicles from a donor area with fine hair, usually the nape or behind the ears, and selects single-hair grafts. These are then placed in the brow one by one through micro-incisions or with an implanter pen.

Three details decide how natural it looks:

  • A very flat angle: brow hair lies almost against the skin. Placed too upright, it sticks out.
  • Direction: at the head of the brow hairs point upward; along the body and tail they run outward and down.
  • Design: the shape is drawn beforehand, sitting upright with a relaxed face, to suit your features rather than a passing trend.

The procedure takes 2 to 5 hours depending on graft numbers, and you return to your hotel the same day. Avoid alcohol the day before, and stop blood-thinning supplements only if your doctor agrees. A small patch is shaved at the back of the head and is covered by the surrounding hair.

Who is a good candidate for an eyebrow transplant?

  • People with thin brows after years of over-plucking or waxing.
  • Brow loss from scars, burns or injury.
  • Congenital gaps or asymmetry that make-up cannot fix.
  • Men who want fuller brows; eyebrow transplants for men are increasingly common.

It is not recommended, or only after proper assessment, with alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia, trichotillomania, uncontrolled thyroid disease or brow loss from an active condition. If your brows have thinned without a clear reason, see a dermatologist first: a transplant does not treat the cause.

Expectations matter too. A transplant can give real, permanent hair, but density is limited by how closely grafts can be placed safely in one session. If you have had brow tattooing before, dense dark pigment can hide new hairs, and some doctors suggest lightening it with a laser first.

Eyebrow transplant vs microblading vs brow tattoo

Eyebrow transplant Microblading Cosmetic tattoo
What it is Real transplanted hair Pigment in fine strokes Pigment as shading or strokes
How long it lasts Permanent About 1–2 years Several years, fades
Volume Yes, three-dimensional No, flat No, flat
Upkeep Trimming Touch-ups Touch-ups
Healing Crusts for 5–7 days A few days A few days

Some people combine the two: a transplant for real volume, and light pigment later if they want sharper definition.

Eyebrow transplant healing time, results and upkeep

  1. Week 1: tiny crusts on each graft, some redness or swelling, sometimes mild bruising that drifts into the eyelid. No make-up on the area and no sleeping face down.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4: most transplanted hairs shed. This is expected; the follicle stays alive under the skin.
  3. Months 3 to 4: new hairs appear, fine at first.
  4. Months 8 to 12: final result. Some people have a second session for more density.

The upkeep surprises many people: because the hair comes from the scalp, it keeps growing and needs trimming, often every one to three weeks. Some hairs may soften slightly over time, but it is wise not to count on it. A few hairs may also grow at a slightly different angle; a brow gel usually keeps them in place.

Complications are uncommon but possible: infection, ingrown hairs, an unnatural angle, asymmetry, or lower graft survival in scarred skin.

Eyebrow transplant downsides to weigh up

Before you decide, be realistic about the drawbacks:

  • You will need to trim your brows for life.
  • Results take time: up to a year.
  • A second session is sometimes needed to reach the density you want.
  • A poor design or wrong angle is hard to undo, since the hairs are permanent.
  • Grafts survive less reliably in scarred or previously tattooed skin.

That is why it pays to look at before and after photos of brows treated by the specialist who will actually do your procedure, not generic clinic galleries.

Eyebrow transplant in Yerevan: stay, flights and follow-up

Two or three days in Yerevan is usually enough: consultation and design, the procedure, and a check-up the next day. You can fly home soon after; avoid rubbing your face on a travel pillow and pack any ointment you are given.

Follow-up continues by photos at months 1, 4, 8 and 12, and a local dermatologist can see you in person if needed. If you are also noticing thinning on the scalp, our hair transplant page may help.

How much does an eyebrow transplant cost?

Eyebrow transplant cost depends mainly on the number of grafts, whether one or both brows are treated, the implantation method, and the transfers and accommodation included. We do not publish set prices: the specialist estimates your grafts from photos and we prepare a personal estimate with everything itemised.

Frequently asked questions

Is an eyebrow transplant permanent?

Yes. Transplanted follicles keep producing hair, which is exactly why they need regular trimming.

How many grafts do I need for eyebrows?

Filling gaps may take 50 to 200 grafts per brow; rebuilding a full brow usually takes 250 to 400. Your specialist confirms this from photos.

Does an eyebrow transplant hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic. The initial injections are the most uncomfortable part, followed by mild tenderness for a few days.

When can I wear make-up after an eyebrow transplant?

Usually once the crusts have fallen off, around 7 to 10 days, and only when your doctor says so.

Can men have an eyebrow transplant?

Yes. The design differs: a male brow is usually straighter, lower and fuller at the inner end.
