PRP for hair after a transplant: how to protect your results long term

A transplant moves hair but does not stop hair loss. Here is what PRP for hair and medical therapy add to keep your result looking full.

PRP for hair (platelet-rich plasma) and doctor-prescribed medication are the two tools most often used to protect a hair transplant over the long run. The reason is simple: a transplant relocates resistant follicles from the donor area, but it does not stop the native hair around them from thinning. If hair loss keeps progressing, a few years later you may have a dense hairline with a gap behind it.

This guide explains what PRP is, how strong the evidence really is, when it is combined with minoxidil or finasteride, and how to plan it if you have your transplant in Yerevan, Armenia, and then fly home.

Why you can still lose hair after a hair transplant

Follicles taken from the back and sides of the head tend to be less sensitive to DHT, the hormone behind male and female pattern hair loss. That is why transplanted hair usually stays. The issue is the hair that was not moved: the crown, the hair between grafts and the zone behind the new hairline.

That native hair follows its own course. In a 25 or 30-year-old with active hair loss, thinning can continue for ten years or more. This is why hair surgeons describe the transplant as one part of a plan, not the whole plan.

Do not confuse this with shock loss, a temporary shedding of native hair near the operated area in the first weeks. It usually recovers within a few months and is unrelated to long-term progression.

What is PRP for hair loss and how does it work?

PRP comes from your own blood. A small sample is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and the plasma is injected into the scalp with fine needles. Platelets release growth factors which, according to the leading theory, stimulate the follicle and extend its growth phase.

What is worth knowing before you book a course:

  • The evidence is moderate and uneven. Several trials and reviews show gains in density and hair thickness in pattern hair loss, but protocols differ widely (platelet concentration, number of sessions, technique), which makes results hard to compare.
  • It works on hair that still exists. It will not create new follicles on completely bald skin.
  • After a transplant, some small studies suggest slightly faster healing and more even early growth, but there is no firm consensus. Many surgeons offer it as an optional add-on, not a requirement.
  • It is maintenance. Stop the sessions and the benefit fades over time.

How many PRP sessions for hair do you need?

A common protocol is 3 to 4 sessions roughly 4 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session every 4 to 6 months. Each session takes about 30 to 45 minutes and needs no time off. Expect some tenderness, mild swelling or tiny red marks for a day or two.

If PRP works for you, it shows at around 3 to 6 months on standardised photos. Search “PRP for hair loss before and after” and you will see very different outcomes, which is expected: the response depends on the type of hair loss, age and what else you combine it with. Claimed “success rates” online rarely use the same definition, so treat them with caution.

Conditions to raise with your doctor first: bleeding disorders, anticoagulant medication, low platelet count, active scalp infection, some cancer treatments and pregnancy.

Minoxidil and finasteride after a hair transplant

These are medicines, so the decision always belongs to a doctor who knows your medical history. The overview below is general information to help you understand the options when they are offered.

Option How it works Usually offered to Points to consider
Topical minoxidil Prolongs the growth phase, improves follicle blood flow Men and women Possible temporary shedding at the start, scalp irritation; benefit fades if stopped
Low-dose oral minoxidil Same mechanism, taken by mouth Selected patients, off-label use Needs medical monitoring (blood pressure, pulse, unwanted body hair)
Finasteride Reduces conversion of testosterone to DHT Men with pattern hair loss Possible sexual and mood side effects; not for women who could become pregnant
PRP for hair Growth factors from your own platelets Men and women, as an add-on Moderate evidence; needs maintenance sessions

When to start or restart each treatment after surgery is your surgeon’s call. With topical minoxidil, for example, many teams ask you to wait until the scalp has healed, usually a few weeks. Never start or stop medication on your own.

PRP or medication alone: how is it decided?

There is no single recipe. A specialist will usually weigh:

  1. Your age and how active your hair loss is. The younger and faster, the more it matters to slow it down.
  2. Your pattern. Norwood scale for men, Ludwig scale for women.
  3. How you tolerate medication. If finasteride is not for you, minoxidil and PRP become more important.
  4. Budget and consistency. PRP means repeat visits; medication means daily discipline.

In practice many patients use medication as the base and add PRP in the first months after surgery or during periods of heavier shedding.

Planning PRP and aftercare around a transplant in Yerevan

If you have your hair transplant in Yerevan, a typical stay is about 3 to 5 days: surgery, a check-up and the first wash with instructions. Some clinics offer a PRP session on the day of surgery or at the final check before your flight. Availability depends on the clinic, and Medarmenia confirms it for you before you book.

Later PRP sessions and any prescription make more sense close to home, with your dermatologist or a hair-loss specialist. We suggest you:

  • Ask the surgeon for a written report with graft numbers, treated zones and medical recommendations.
  • Take monthly photos in the same light and from the same angles.
  • Share those photos at remote check-ins around 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

Flights to Yerevan usually connect through a regional hub; check current entry requirements for your nationality before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can PRP replace a hair transplant?

No. PRP may improve thickness and slow loss of the hair you still have, but it cannot grow hair on bald areas. A transplant fills in; PRP and medication help you keep what you have.

When can I have PRP after a hair transplant?

Some surgeons apply it during the procedure or in the following days, while others prefer to wait a few weeks for the scalp to heal. Follow your own surgeon’s protocol.

Is PRP for hair painful?

You feel needle pricks and some pressure. Many clinics use cooling or local anaesthetic, and the discomfort usually settles within hours.

Do I need finasteride for life after a transplant?

It is not mandatory. It is a medical decision based on your type of hair loss, age and how you tolerate the drug. If it is stopped, its protective effect on native hair is gradually lost.

Will transplanted hair fall out over the years?

Transplanted hair is usually stable because it comes from a resistant zone, although all hair may thin slightly with age. What changes most is the native hair around the grafts.
